January 27 2007- National Day of Energy Action

Reduce Your Own Energy Footprint Today

In Your Home and Workplace:

  1. Replace your most frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent and other energy efficient bulbs
  2. Weatherize your home by caulking and weather stripping your doorways and windows
  3. Unplug Un-Used Electronics, including televisions, stereos and computers, which consume electricity even when in "sleep" mode
    1. For convenience with numerous related electronic items, e.g., the components in an audio/video system, plug all items into one or more appropriately rated power strips and use the strip’s single on/off switch to easily turn everything on/off
  4. Include energy efficiency ratings (and water consumption if applicable) in purchase decisions for new appliances. Ratings are clearly marked and compare efficiency of that model to others in the same category. See Energy Star
  5. Only run your dishwasher and washing machine with a full load
  6. Adjust your thermostat down a couple of degrees in winter and up in the summer
  7. If your thermostat is programmable, program it for efficiency, e.g., 10 degrees F cooler during hours when everyone is at work/school in the winter
  8. Use insulated drapes on windows in the winter if you live in a cold climate
  9. Replace (indoor) filter(s) in central heat/ac system each month
  10. Install a low-flow shower head and take shorter showers
  11. Keep your water heater thermostat no higher than 120 degrees F
  12. Buy local or organic foods
  13. Use 100% post consumer recycled paper
  14. Enroll in local and green power programs if available in your community -- contact your local power company to find out how
  15. Recycle!

On the Road:
